As yesterday marks the end of the most popular festive season in the south East of Nigeria which is the New yam festival also know as Iri iji in some particular area and Afia olu in Nnewi and her neighboring community. A mysterious masquerade was seen playing conga drums in the street of Nnewi along KDR Ndiakwu otolo which is some meter to the popular Dr ikedife hospital.
The video which was recorded in one Dj Micky’s office,Dj Micky’s office which is said to be a home for entertainment during any festive season in Nnewi.
He was just entertaining the whole community with his melodious mix and magical scratch as the Masquerade invaded his shop just to scare the people sitted and having fun.
In the process of trying to scare away most especially the ladies or force out money from them,he was moved by the DJ’s switch,then decided to show the crowd what he can do asides been a masquerade.
Robust cultural festivities and celebration usually associated with the annual ‘Afiaolu’ New yam festival in the Nnewi community of Anambra state may have faded with modernity, as this year festival, which began on Wednesday witnessed poor participation by indigenes of the community.
The event, usually characterized by colourful displays by various groups of masquerades and traditional dance troupes, witnessed very few members of the commercial city and groups interested in participating in the festivities.
Visits to various parts of the community revealed that most of the residents were going about their normal businesses, while others chose to spend the day worshiping in their churches, as indigenes expressed fears about threat to their culture.
